Why is shakespeare notable for his "understanding of human emotion and intellect"?

I'm confused with the unbridled praise being heaped onto him. I see no real psychological innovation in his work. I realize the "artful" way he uses english has teachers enamored with his, but to me this fancifulness (I forget the correct term) is more valuable as a window into his time.
